Phil Collins - Scala

Phil Collins and the band played a concert recorded for broadcast by BBC Radio 2 on 16th November 2002. Three hundred lucky prize winners plus family, friends and guests attended.
the La Scala Theatre is a small, unprepossessing joint at the corner of Pentonville Road and the Caledonian Road - just round from the Kings Cross Thameslink station. Seen better looking places - hardly the Albert Hall or MSG. But never mind, for tonight it is hosting the hottest ticket in town - an exclusive 'private' performance by Phil Collins and his boys and girls. The concert is to be recorded for broadcast by BBC Radio 2 (16th November) and the lucky audience is made up of 300 souls who were fortunate enough to win tickets and the usual assortment of 'men in suits', friends, hangers-on, record company types, etc. Oh yes, and Phil's family, amongst them mum June, lovely wife Orianne and little Nicholas, the most recent addition to the Clan Collins.
The performance is due to start at 8pm and, in the moments before, confused members of the audience wonder round the three bars and the standing-only auditorium wondering where best to stand (and why a bottle of Stella cost ?.50? Isn't the Licence Fee enough nowadays?). Throughout this, your correspondent is in something of a panic. He has been summoned to attend by no less than Tony Smith, bearded management mogul, told to bring his digital camera and instructed, on pain of excommunication and worse, to take flattering snaps of the star and his musical mates. The only problem is that, unbelievably, members of the public have assumed all the best positions and seem reluctant to move. I suggest whips and cattle prods but, perpexingly, the crowd control flight case was left back at The Farm somehow. Talk about organisation! You just can't get the managers nowadays.
Enter, stage right, Carol Willis, chief factotum and all-round good egg. Taking matters in hand she approaches a burly gentleman in a black t-shirt emblazoned 'Security (who let all these people in here?)' and asks him to allow the pathetic balding person lurking behind her to enter the balcony so he can take some shots. 'No, family only', comes the terse reply. More panic as minions are sent scuttling hither and thither to locate someone with the right colour laminate who can authorise said request. Eventually, no less a personage than Tony Smith passes by and access is granted.
To some suspicious glances, your reporter slips guiltily into a narrow space behind a line of chairs in which sit Mrs June Collins, Orianne and Nicholas and several other family members (Orianne's mother?). Most suspicious of all is PC's PA, Annie Callingham, who threatens to launch this interloper into the audience below until he manages to gasp "Tony Smith said I could" while Annie engages him in a firm but friendly head lock (we are later formally introduced having only previously spoken on the phone and, yes, everything I have written above is an egregious lie).
At 8 o'clock a dapper Paul Gambaccini grabs the microphone and makes the introductions, a lower form of BBC life having previously made some safety announcement plus a request to turn off mobile phones (the safety announcement seemed to say 'in the event of a fire please stay where you are, you will not notice any discernible change in the heat levels' but maybe I have this wrong). Enter, from rear stage left, PC and some of the gang to tumultuous applause.
Now, these guys know how to dress (as you will see from the attached photographs) and we are dazzled by the fine array of stage apparel which seems to comprise a job lot of black t-shirts and faded jeans. Phil takes to the piano and delivers a heart-felt 'In The Air Tonight'. Cue mass hysteria in the audience - plus a certain amount of concern from yours truly as he can see neither hide nor hair of Mr Collins from his position in the family seats. Bugger - no snaps.
Things improve when Phil bounces perkily centre stage and from then on it's mayhem all the way. I won't bother you with the details of the set-list (don't want to destroy the tension when you listen to the broadcast), suffice to say that everything you would want to hear plus quite a few things you really might not expect are delivered impeccably but in an informal way which adds charm to the whole event. Phil is in relaxed mood, chatting to the audience, reacting with the guys and lady on stage, smiling, bouncing around and singing his socks off. After about 45 minutes he points out that his mum is in the audience. June waves back happily. Phil then announces it's her birthday. Crowd cheer, sing 'Happy birthday to You'. June stands and waves, seriously upstaging son. Son yells, "That's enough of that!" Crowd hoot with laughter, music resumes.
But what Phil and the crowd could not see, was little Nicholas's reaction to his dad's performance. Clapping along (this little guy has serious rhythm) and then slipping off his mum's lap to engage in some dance moves that will have the ladies going wild in the not too distant future. Stand aside dad, the new generation is in town!
After what seemed like 20 minutes but was, in fact, something like 100, the show comes to an end. Phil and the band - and the audience - have enjoyed themselves hugely. Phil has made a somewhat wistful comment about touring, has got the audience to sing large chunks of Sussudio and indulged in some serious 'call and response' scat singing with them (boy, that audience must have rehearsed hard. Where and when did they get to do it?). Everyone, on and off stage, has been reminded just how seriously good this guy is (did we need reminding?) and how much he will be missed if the 'no more touring' statement proves to be true.
A moving, life-affirming, raucous, hugely enjoyable, talent-filled evening. Best thing to happen down King's Cross for many a long year. In short: bloody marvellous!

Genesis - Summer Nights

A favourite of the bootleggers, this final concert of the stadium leg of the "We Can't Dance" tour received much exposure world-wide. It received live air play on BBC Radio 1 in the UK and also in Germany on SWF3's "Liverock" station. In addition it was broadcast twice on Sky One in the UK and was shown via satellite TV in various other countries. A futher TV rebroadcast was on UK Gold in 1993, but marred by frequent adverts. Genesis were firing on all cylinders and turned in a wonderfully energetic performance, though this comes over much more strongly on video than from sound alone.
The first of the two original UK TV broadcasts was live on the air and the technicians had some problems with the sound mix. For all shows on the We Can't Dance tour, the main concert mix was provided by a Midas XL3 desk. Using direct and auxiliary outputs from this desk feeds were sent to a Mackie 1604 rack desk and a couple of microphones pointed at the audience. Broadcasting companies could tap into the Mackie 1604 and produce a stereo mix independently of the main board, tailored to their own requirements and capturing crowd noise for a more authentic live sound. In the event, for the Knebworth show, the crowd were too high in the mix and the microphones were placed too far back and pointed at the PA instead of the audience!
Sound on the second broadcast (a few days later) was better, suggesting that the recording was doctored afterwards. For this to have been technically possible, the BBC must have made a multitrack recording from the Mackie 1604 independently of their live stereo broadcast mix, allowing them to produce a different stereo mix in a studio prior to rebroadcast. There are several good bootleg CDs of this show including a sneaky release which attempts to beat the competition by advertising itself as "Espace Grammont, Montpelier, 20th July 1992" [WN-EG 3-PC 12.1-2 - 2CD]. One to go for is "Summer Nights" [Kiss The Stone KTS 106-107 - 2CD] due to excellent CD mastering, though some of Phil's song intros are missing. Another fake liable to cause confusion is "But You Can Dance" [Dead Dog Records SE311 - CD] labelled as "Live Switzerland Radio" and attributed to St. Jakob Football Stadium, Basel, Switzerland 26th July 1992. Very probably, this was recorded from a Swiss broadcast of the Knebworth gig, as evidenced by the inclusion of a Swiss announcer on the CD. A couple more strange ones are "We" [Alien Sound Music] and "18 Million Dollars To Dance" [German records Gen CD 0.17 - CD] which have songs from earlier tours mixed in haphazardly. Also circulating are a great CDR transfer of the BBC Radio broadcast caught on VHS video soundtrack, and a definitive DVD version using the same soundtrack synced with a PAL video from the TV broadcast. The National Sound Archive lists a VHS cassette with sound only from the live BBC Radio 1 broadcast, presented by Anne Nightingale, where listener's record requests are followed by the Knebworth 1992 concert.

Brand X - Don't Make Waves

BxdontmakewavesBrand X were a British jazz-rock fusion outfit formed by Genesis drummer Phil Collins and Atomic Rooster guitarist John Goodsall as a side project from their regular groups. Their initial lineup also included keyboardist Robin Lumley and bassist Percy Jones (the Liverpool Scene, the Scaffold). Brand X's debut album, Unorthodox Behaviour, was released in 1976; a live album, Livestock, and the studio effort Moroccan Roll followed in 1977. Collins left the group to concentrate on Genesis, and for 1978's Masques, he was replaced by Al DiMeola drummer Chuck Burghi, as well as additional keyboardist Peter Robinson, who had played with Stanley Clarke. Three further albums -- 1979's Product, 1980's Do They Hurt?, and 1982's Is There Anything About? -- followed before the group disbanded.
In 1979, Collins was temporarily free of commitments with Genesis, and re-joined Brand X for the series of recording sessions which would produce two albums, 1979's Product and 1980's Do They Hurt?. These took place at Startling Studios, located in Ringo Starr's countryside home (formerly owned by John Lennon), with two distinct line-ups operating in alternation, as Jones later explained. "Our record and management companies were both complaining about poor record sales and telling us we had to make the music more accessible. Some of the guys agreed to go along with this but I felt that to do this would not generate a new audience but would probably just alienate the one that we already had. The only solution was to have two bands, one being more accessible and the other being more experimental or whatever. For my stuff the line-up was Robinson, Clark, Goodsall and me; for the other direction it was Lumley, Collins and Goodsall with John Giblin on bass. We recorded in shifts, ours was 8pm to 4am and the others 10am to 6pm. How Goodsall managed to do both is still a mystery to me !".

Genesis - Trick of a trail outtakes

Genesis_AtottBy 1970 Genesis were making headway with their uniquely theatrical brand of progressive rock. A series of personnel changes introduced a new drummer, Phil Collins, and guitarist Steve Hackett. Gradually, the world started to prick up its ears. Mike Rutherford: "We've always gone down well in the big industrial cities of the East Coast and Mid West (America), maybe because of the element of fantasy and escapism in our shows." Following the extraordinary success of the band's seventh album, a soundtrack to their spectacular stage show 'The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway,' Peter Gabriel left in 1975. "We came close to calling it a day when Pete left," Rutherford recalls, "It wasn't that we lost our nerve. We were always confident we could write the music, because Tony and I had done most of 'The Lamb.' It was just a question of whether the public would accept us." They did. Collins took over on vocals "because he really wanted to do it, basically" and the next installment of Genesis, 'A Trick Of The Tail,' promptly outsold all of their previous releases.

Black Sabbath - Party At the palace 2001

Ozzy1The Queen Golden jubilee celebration of 3 June 2001 culminated in a pop music concert in the evening in Buckingham Palace Gardens. The concert, called "Party at the Palace", showcased the achievements in pop music over the previous fifty years.
The concert was attended by all the members of the immediate British Royal Family, including Prince Andrew, who returned from the World Cup matches in Japan. Among the headlining acts at the concert were Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, Cliff Richard and Tony Bennett. Queen guitarist Brian May started the event by playing his electrifying arrangement of the God Save the Queen, the British national anthem, on the roof. Paul McCartney ended the night with such numbers as "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and "Hey Jude".
Stars were falling over themselves to take part - just about every big name from Tony Bennett, Aretha Franklin and Shirley Bassey to Atomic Kitten, Mis-Teeq and S Club 7 by way of Eric Clapton, Elton John, Rod Stewart, Paul McCartney, Annie Lennox, Brian Wilson, Ray Davies, Tom Jones and Phil Collins and the former wild man of heavy metal Ozzy Osbourne. Ozzy2The concert, which was televised live to an estimated worldwide audience of 200 million, ran for more than three hours on Monday June 3.
Asked about the appearance of the 53-year-old, Birmingham-born former Black Sabbath rock star with a reputation partly based on biting the head off a bat on stage, a palace official said: "We have taken the very best of advice, mainly from the BBC."
