Black Sabbath - Going Through Changes
This interesting audience recording from Sabbath’s January ’73 Australian tour was once quite sought after, since it was initially kept fairly rare by a small number of collectors. In 2003, the Ngaruawahia tape finally surfaced for the rest of the world to hear. The Ngaruawahia tape then quickly turned up on the Japanese boot GOING THROUGH CHANGES, which was released on October 3, 2003 through Lost And Found Records.
The main point of interest for both this and the Sydney show are the only known live recordings of “Changes” done by the original lineup. "Changes" was Tony's 1st ever piano piece, which explains its relative simplicity. It must have have been rather interesting to watch this very unique Black Sabbath live performance with Tony playing piano, while Geezer handled the string accompaniment with a mellotron. Sabbath didn't seem especially keen on the idea of performing “Changes” live, but made exception during the Aussie shows due to the popularity of that song down under. In retrospect, it’s rather cool to hear the band pushing their boundaries a bit by performing such a mellow piece, even if much of the crowd used it as an opportunity to chat! I prefer this version over the Sydney version for the slight boost in quality and the overall performance. The taper sounds as if they are standing closer to the stage than the Sydney taper(s) were. Also, Tony goofs the ending in Sydney, so this is a better representation of the song.
"Changes" was later resurrected in November '95 for the last shows of the FORBIDDEN world tour (with a different lineup) and was played as the outro music for their 2001 U.S. tour (and at Graspop Fest in '98). Ozzy himself performed the song on his NO MORE TEARS tour, even recording it for LIVE AND LOUD. And of course, he recently re-recorded yet another rendition with his daughter Kelly.
While Ngaruawahia is a cool show to hear (especially with the raw version of "Cornucopia" featured in the show), don't expect anything as stunning as Asbury Park '75. It's at least a very good audience recording with lots of amusing sounds from the crowd throughout. The original source tape played fast, but I believe there is now a speed corrected (and noise reduced) version out there as well.

Ozzy Osbourne - Bat's Head Soup

MAX NORMAN on Mixing Tribute Album using the Bats Head Soup Tape: An interesting story about that was, they sent me two different tapes. They said look "We got these two different shows, which show should we use?" So I listened to these 2 tapes. One of them was really pretty good, and the other one didn't seem very good at all. It wasn't very exciting. I was trying to work out why, and what was going on because it seemed a little weird to me. Then I finally realized they we're the same show, with radically different mixes. They told me one was King Biscuit and one was Cleveland. It had been mixed completely differently. And I realized that the one that sounded really good, was the one with Randy really loud in the mix. The one that didn't sound very good was the one where Randy was down in the mix. Randy was rushing so much, and was so ahead of the beat on stuff. If you turned him up it all made sense. But if you turned him down, then it sounded very chopped out. So it gave me inkling about, well I'll use this one, I'll just mix it like this. Because that's the way it works. That gave me a good clue about how to mix it. I mixed it in CBS Studios in New York City on 71rst and Broadway.

Black Sabbath - Dayton '72
This another very good show but somewhat flawed audience recording. There are some cuts between songs (presumably done by the taper during the show) and during the intro for "Iron Man". Earlier copies of this show that I owned were very muted and muddy sounding. But after hearing a digital clone of the master tape, I am revising my previous judgment onf the Dayton '72 show (which was 'good at best'). There is much more treble in the original recording than I had been able to hear in the higher generation dubs. In fact, the only instrument that seemed a bit low in the mix was the bass. Ozzy's vocals are clear, Tony's guitar rings through and Bill's drums are all right there in the mix.. According to Michael Lindenauer, the remastered version of Dayton '72 came about after the original taper was found by a guy named Pat Patton in 1998. It was during the process of negotiating for an uncirculated recording of Jeff Beck from Dayton 3/11/72 that the Sabbath tape was uncovered. At least two attempts at transferring the reel to reel master were made and the 2nd was definitely an improvement upon previously available copies. However, the last remaster was done with the same old reel to reel recorder that the taper used back in 1972. There remains the possibility that a new transfer on newer equipment could yield even better results.Sabbath is playing well here at the beginning of their U.S. tour to promote VOLUME 4. Dayton '72 contains the earliest recorded live versions of "Under The Sun" and "Wheels Of Confusion" currently in circulation. "Under The Sun" is performed here at a brisker tempo than the studio version. Iommi's live arrangement of his multi-tracked guitar solo is well executed, leaving us all to wonder WHY they didn't play this song at more shows? Also, Dayton '72 features the ONLY complete live version of "Wheels Of Confusion" out there, as opposed to the cut version which is on the Hollywood Bowl 9/15/72 tape.
A really classic VOLUME 4 show to have, despite it's minor shortcomings. Just be sure to find a low generation copy!

Excellent quality recording. This Aces High release boasts that it is an “Original Stereo Soundboard Recording”, a “Digitally Remastered Edition” and a “Fan Club Issue only” of a bout 300 copies world wide. Whether or not any of these claims are true is another story altogether, but SWOT is a good bootleg for what it is. Kudos for attractive NEVER SAY DIE themed artwork. Some anonymously penned liner notes go a long way to convince the buyer that this is the first actual soundboard tape from the Ozzy years to leak into circulation. They do so by pointing towards the commonly circulated shows like Paris ’70, Cal Jam ’74 and various other TV/Radio broadcasts and claiming that those aren’t true soundboards. I’d beg to differ on the Cal Jam ’74 recording, but I’d have to agree that this mystery writer isn’t totally off base. There are surprisingly few raw soundboard recordings with Ozzy, next to none if you don’t include the FM and TV recordings. So yes, this is tape is very special in that respect. |

Ozzy Osbourne - Wembley Madness
His TV show may have made him even richer, but the mainstream view of Ozzy Osbourne as a bumbling TV clown has damaged his rightful legacy as a rock pioneer. To the frenzied fans who packed Wembley in June, Ozzy was no joke, but a hero. And they had a point.
Osbourne's time with Black Sabbath saw him establish heavy metal as we know it, selling 70 million records into the bargain. And after nearly 40 years in the business, the Birmingham-born hellraiser is still attracting new fans, a feat acknowledged by the Icon award he won at this week's Mojo Awards.
Clips of his TV tomfoolery flashed up on screens before his arrival, but the crowd - predominantly male and ranging from grizzled old rockers and tattooed Hell's Angel types to skinny young teenagers in even skinnier jeans - didn't want Ozzy the comedian. They wanted Ozzy the rock God.
Sporting a majestic mane of hair, his trademark eyeliner, and a bit of a paunch, he shrieked: "Are you ready to go f***in' crazy?" The answer was a resounding yes, and the crowd's reward was a wild rendition of his 1983 hit, Bark At The Moon.
Widespread air-guitar-playing broke out as his unmistakably eerie voice cut through the roar of the guitars. As the crowd screamed out the chorus, it was clear that for them, Ozzy could do no wrong.
Technically, Osbourne certainly did do a few things wrong. But with the exception of the slightly ropey power ballad, Road To Nowhere, none of his songs were spoiled by his inability to hit all the notes correctly.
He was backed up by the brilliant guitar skills and stage presence of long-time collaborator, Zakk Wylde, whose group, Black Label Society, provided support and whose huge hair, studded guitar strap and theatrical movements brought to mind a Dungeons & Dragons character.
Indeed, there was a gloriously cartoon-like quality to the whole show whose highlight for me was the gritty abandon of War Pigs and which ended, unsurprisingly, with the Black Sabbath classic – his trademark as he said on the speak of the Devil Album -, Paranoid.

I know some of you been dying to hear this show for the last 6 months…. Thank you for your patience. This was my first Ozzy concert whom I had been dying to see for over 15 years!! It was recorded with a TCD-D6 and transfered with my usual arsenal of studio tools!!! I thought that Zack Solo was rather uninspired.. He copies Randy Solo from the Tribute Album… Prefer the solo he does at Tower theater 1989… that is a killa!! Email me pictures you took from the show or any ozzy concerts… That would be much apreciated!!!! |
