Black Sabbath - Party At the palace 2001
The Queen Golden jubilee celebration of 3 June 2001 culminated in a pop music concert in the evening in Buckingham Palace Gardens. The concert, called "Party at the Palace", showcased the achievements in pop music over the previous fifty years.
The concert was attended by all the members of the immediate British Royal Family, including Prince Andrew, who returned from the World Cup matches in Japan. Among the headlining acts at the concert were Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, Cliff Richard and Tony Bennett. Queen guitarist Brian May started the event by playing his electrifying arrangement of the God Save the Queen, the British national anthem, on the roof. Paul McCartney ended the night with such numbers as "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and "Hey Jude".
Stars were falling over themselves to take part - just about every big name from Tony Bennett, Aretha Franklin and Shirley Bassey to Atomic Kitten, Mis-Teeq and S Club 7 by way of Eric Clapton, Elton John, Rod Stewart, Paul McCartney, Annie Lennox, Brian Wilson, Ray Davies, Tom Jones and Phil Collins and the former wild man of heavy metal Ozzy Osbourne. The concert, which was televised live to an estimated worldwide audience of 200 million, ran for more than three hours on Monday June 3.
Asked about the appearance of the 53-year-old, Birmingham-born former Black Sabbath rock star with a reputation partly based on biting the head off a bat on stage, a palace official said: "We have taken the very best of advice, mainly from the BBC."
