Recorded live in Japan in 2006, this live document features a unique jam between MMW organist John Medeski and Canadian turnablist Kid Koala. John is known to have experiment live music with a record spinner (Dj Logic) in the past. This is not surprising that he sounds very confortable on those 3 improvisations. Kid Koala was doing the opening set for MMW at the True People's Celebration and carried on over 3 tracks with John only. They later on in November played a sold out show at the Merkin Hall in New York. The latter became a MMW traders favorite.
On a chilly early October night in 1996, a couple hundred heads headed up to Port Chester for what promised to be a legendary evening at a legendary venue, The Capitol Theater. On the bill: Medeski, Martin, and Wood with opening act moe. Quite a night, indeed. MMW's performance that night ranged from swallow-the-room-funk to bone-chilling, erie exploration. I was hooked for sure. One of the finest sets I have ever listened, by any band or artist.
Medeski Martin & Wood (or MMW) is a US jazz trio originally formed in 1991, consisting of John Medeski on keyboards, Billy Martin on drums and percussion, and Chris Wood on double bass and bass guitar. The band received some of their first significant exposure outside of the New York City jazz scene by performing with Phish at their October 14, 1995 concert, which led to the association of the group as a jam band. In addition, their performance on John Scofield's 1997 album A Go Go helped to further their exposure. The band collaborated further with Scofield again in 2006, releasing the album Out Louder under the name Medeski Scofield Martin & Wood. This was the first album released on MMW's own Indirecto Records. The line up is curently touring Europe and were captured at the London Babican by BBC radio 3.
