Kid Kenobi - Aussy Breakbeats

KidKenobi003Since his early beginnings behind the decks in 1996, Sydney based Kid Kenobi has steadily risen to his current place as the busiest DJ on Australian shores, now widely regarded as the home of the most booming breaks scene in the world.
2002 & 2001 saw him take the award for the Australian DJ of the Year, and in 2001 he also took home the award for People's Choice NSW DJ of the Year at the Australian Dance Music Awards. A great feat for not only Kid Kenobi as a DJ but also for the ever growing breaks community in Australia. Complimenting these awards are endless residencies and guest spots around the country where the Kid plays to consistently packed out houses, often to the point of hungry punters being turned away.
KidKenobi001These awards are merely a tip on the iceberg for a largely successful year or two which have seen Kid Kenobi features splashed across the pages of Rolling Stone, FHM, Ralph and Urb to name just a few. Countless radio and TV appearances ensued. Alongside his role as a well-respected music journalist, the Kid’s unique mix of educator and entertainer as a DJ has undoubtedly played a mammoth part in the success of breakbeat downunder.
IKidKenobi002t’s often surprising to both peers and punters that such a profile has stemmed from the art of dj-ing alone. This has provided the inspiration for Kid Kenobi to undertake production work, his first being the double mix CD for Ministry of Sound Australia aptly titled "A Clubbers Guide to Breaks". Outselling prominent international releases in the same genre, a second Clubbers Guide to Breaks release was released October 2002. His debut remix of Green Velvet’s “La La Land”, a collaboration between Kid Kenobi and Poxy Music (Pocket and Ken Cloud) is also out now on Hussle Recordings, receiving great reactions from both international and local djs as well as trainspotters from around the globe.
KidKenobi004In the meantime, a calling to explore foreign shores and a "break" into production has taken the Aussie breaks battler to the UK, Europe and New York where he engaged in a number of overseas performances and spent time in the studio with some of his favorite international engineers. If the past is anything to go by, the future looks very bright indeed.

Nice article it's great to see an Aussie being recognized globally and especially in the breaks scene. I have seen and met Kid Kenobi several times and every one has been good set. Right from dirty Moon Bar days through to Family Met the rest of the national set and the global breakbeat grazers. Keep it up Kid Kenobi it awesome being able to say to those folks i meet on my travels that the tracks by a bloke that played at my local stomping grounds.
