Ian Dury & The Blockheads - Hammersmith Odeon '79

Ian Dury 1941-2000Formed in 1977 to promote Ian Durys' album 'New Boots and Panties' on the first Stiff Records tour of the U.K. Chaz Jankel, Norman Watt-Roy, Charlie Charles, John Turnbull and Mick Gallagher became known as 'The Blockheads' (a reference to a song on Ian's album). As 'Ian Dury & The Blockheads' they went back out on tour, this time without Chaz Jankel, and in 1978 released 'What a Waste' a single that reached number five in the U.K. charts. They were then joined by saxophonist Davey Payne and toured the U.S.A supporting Lou Reed across North America ending with their own dates in California (with backline roadie Pete Rush)
In late 1978 Chaz returned to the fold and composed 'Hit me with your Rhythm Stick' with Ian. The band recorded it in The Workhouse Studios, Old Kent Road, London and in 1979 had a number one hit record with it in the U.K. Ian Dury & The Blockheads went on to record the 'Do it Yourself' album and toured Europe and the U.K. recording 'Reasons to be Cheerful, Part 3' in Rome. Released as a single in late 1979 it reached number three in the U.K. charts.

NOTES:

"Upgrades From The Boxed Set". This is actually a pretty neat CD.KM continues his madcap spoofs we got a taste of on the 30 Years MaximumR&B box set. These are, with the exception of Tommy's Holiday Camp, all studiocuts and include some humorous band banter between the cuts. Melancholia isThe Who's version, different from PT's Scoop version. Tommy's Holiday Camp islive from an unknown source but appears to be from from TKAA / Kilburn era judg-ing from the sound. I Am The Sea / The Real Me is a Who version I've never heardbefore. It's a bit slower and the brass in the background is more prominent than onany known demo version, PT's guitar parts are also played differently than on anyknown versions. One Life's Enough is a RD "crooner" that could've well fit well witheither of his solo LP's Daltrey or One Of The Boys.

Depeche Mode - Happy Birthday Fletch

DM - tempa 2001

Currently they are so many Depeche Mode bootlegs doing the rounds from every different era of the bands back catalogue; it's difficult to know exactly what to go for. This recording, lifted from a show in Florida on the 8th of July 2001 captures the band on their tour in support of the excellent Exciter album which is played in the most part, with a supporting set of excellent classic hits from yesteryear. Like all DM fan output, this has had a lot of time and loving care put into it, and the underground fan base movement no doubt has contributed to the current boom the band is experiencing.
While the cover art is uncharacteristically poor, the sound recording represents a very pleasing B quality and save for the odd bit of audience chatter it’s highly impressive.

Horses Brawl - Echoes from the past

Horses Brawl have been causing quite a stir with their innovative take on folk and early music. Formed in 2003, the Norfolk based experimental duo have performed widely throughout England including Tate Britain, Oxford Folk Festival and The Spitz and as well as having been broadcast on BBC Radio 3, Resonance FM and internationally.
Their debut self-titled album released in late 2005 received highly acclaimed
reviews in Songlines, Tradition and The Recorder Magazine, and their performances have been editors picks in The Guardian Guide and The Independent. It was also in the fROOTs Top Ten album list and has had thousands of iTunes downloads all over the world.
With roots firmly in traditional English folk and early music from Europe, they experiment with their instruments to produce contemporary arrangements on guitar, bowed guitar, double barrelled
recorders, crumhorn and fiddle. Horses Brawl are making their mark by being one of the only early music groups who perform in both concert and gig settings from Queen Elizabeth Hall suppporting the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment to the Norwich Pop Underground Convention.
Their virtuosity and originality draws in even the most unsuspecting audience
members, they have been hailed by BBC Radio 3 as “a group to keep an eye on... it’s great stuff”. Verity Sharp, Late Junction
Performed with vivacity and verve, they re-work and re-compose traditional
and ancient music including everything from the tune to a 14th century Italian hopping dance and the mournful lament of a de-frocked monk to the Norfolk fiddle tune ‘Shave the Donkey’.
In late 2007 Horses Brawl released their second album ‘Dindirin’ and following
a live concert broadcast on BBC Radio 3’s Early Music Show, the duo continue to tour with it throughout the UK in 2008.

the Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster - Ocean Cataclysm and other Stories

80_s_matchbox001

Originally formed in 1999, the band comprised Guy McKnight (vocals), Andy Huxley (lead guitarist), Marc Norris (rhythm guitarist), Symren 'Sym' Gharial (bassist), and Tom Diamantopoulo (drummer), until May 2005, in which Andy Huxley "decided to leave due to a decrease in musical similarities" to form the death-jazz band Vile Imbeciles and was replaced by Rich Fownes from With Scissors. The band's sound is dark and blues-influenced, with wild crooning vocals, deep bass lines and tom-heavy tribal drumming. In their first few years as a band, they were known for their large black car with red and orange flames on each side. According to Guy McKnight on MTV Two's Gonzo the car has now gone. The band are renowned for their intense live shows, where McKnight regularly leaves the stage during numbers to mingle with the crowd. They have released two full-length albums, "Hörse Of the Dög" in 2002 and "The Royal Society" in October 2004. The band have released seven singles on various different formats, each release has had several b-sides included and so the band have a large amount of songs that cannot be found on their albums. The song "Mister Mental" was featured on the "romzomcom" movie "Shaun of the Dead", the film also contained posters and other references to the band.In 2003 Guy McKnight, Tom Diamantopoulo and former member Andy Huxley all became Buddhists after giving up drugs. In an interview, former member Andy Huxley was questioned about his reasons for giving up drugs he said "Because it's irresponsible, and you can't get anything done, and it stifles your creativity, and there's no benefit in it really, apart from its like going on vacation constantly, I can't write any songs when I'm on drugs, I need to be sober".

Body Count - Don't F###k with me New York!

In 2006, Body Count returned to the stage from a ten year hiatus at the Knit (Main Space). To be honest, I wasn't sure what to expect while listening. I hoped to hear certain songs from the band's first album, the self-titled "Body Count". I also knew this tour was supporting the band's new release "Murder 4 Hire".
BC was awesome. Ernie C is a masterful guitarist. Ice demanded attention and got it. Leaning on the old catalog was probably a good idea - the crowd responded enthusiastically. Highlights were "Body Count's In The House", "KKK B*tch", "There Goes The Neighborhood", and "Voodoo". Additionally, I lol'd during "Cop Killer". T was like: "...cops can suck my d*ck!!! I play one on tv (on Law and Order: SVU)....they can still suck my d*ck!!!!....". Good one, Ice.

The Monkees - Made in Japan - 1968

Monkees_tokyojapan_1968-frontIn the early days of The Monkees, there was some fuss over the fact that session musicians played on their first couple of albums.
Add to this the fact that they had been brought together for a TV series, any thought of artistic integrity or status was a definite no.
However they were fun, their fan base included The Beatles, and repeats of the TV series, still appear time and again on cable and satellite channels.
However by 1968 the TV series was over, the band completed a Far East tour, the last with Peter Tork as part of the band at that juncture, and their very alternative and psychedelic film 'Head' was released.
This is from the 'Far East' tour, and captures a band that at least live, probably still had something to prove.
You can also enjoy a couple of 'hot rocking' Japanese DJ's whose voice overs, bring a huge smile to my face, somehow I think this was pretty serious stuff for them.
Clearly from a radio broadcast of the show - FM thankfully - but remember this was 1968, so don't expect audio heaven, that said it is highly listenable, after the initial intros.
